Key facts about NASH
The liver is an essential organ in the human body. We cannot live without it, so it is important we take good care of it.
Liver diseases can be difficult to spot, since they often are silent.
NASH is a chronic and progressive disease caused by fat deposition in the liver, which causes inflammation and damage of the liver. If not treated, NASH can develop into cirrhosis, liver failure and cancer, which are all severe diseases.
It is unknown why some people develop NASH and others don't, but people with certain medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol are at a higher risk of developing this disease.
There are currently very limited options to treat NASH.
What is the ESSENCE study?
In the ESSENCE study, we will investigate if the drug called semaglutide can slow or reverse NASH to a less severe stage. Previous clinical studies have shown that treatment with semaglutide may help in weight loss and other features potentially beneficial for patients with NASH.
Semaglutide is already approved in many countries at a lower dose to treat type 2 diabetes.
By joining the ESSENCE study you will join a big worldwide community, with 1200 participants in 37 countries, for up to 5 years. You will not be alone!
You will need to have an injection of semaglutide or placebo ("dummy" medication, an injection that does not have any medicine given for comparison) once a week, attend visits at the doctor clinic for up to 5 years, and phone visits with your study staff
How can I be part of the ESSENCE study?
You may qualify to participate in the ESSENCE study if:
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You have already had a liver biopsy confirming NASH or are willing to have one
- You are able to attend regular clinic visits and receive phone calls over a period of 5 years
